gratiTUBE: The legend of Suspended Coffees

Many years ago in Naples, Italy, a legend was born…

            Espresso Sospeso

The legend of Espresso Sospeso or Suspended Coffee goes as…

We enter a little coffeehouse with a friend of mine and give our order. While we’re approaching our table two people come in and they go to the counter:

“Five coffees, please. Two of them for us and three suspended”

They pay for their order, take the two and leave.

I ask my friend:

“What are those ‘suspended’ coffees?”

My friend:

“Wait for it and you will see.”

Some more people enter. Two girls ask for one coffee each, pay and go. The next order was for seven coffees and it was made by three lawyers – three for them and four ‘suspended’. While I still wonder what’s the deal with those ‘suspended’ coffees I enjoy the sunny weather and the beautiful view towards the square in front of the café. Suddenly a man dressed in shabby clothes who looks like a beggar comes in through the door and kindly asks

“Do you have any suspended coffee?”

If you know what a suspended coffee is, chances are you would have heard/ read the story above. I read it just recently and couldn’t help sharing it here again. It’s such a beautiful (and easy to volunteer for) act of kindness. All you need to do is walk into a café offering suspended coffees and while you order your coffee, you buy one (or maybe more) for a friend you don’t know!In near future someone will be enjoying the warmth of the drink and your kindness.

suspended coffees, gratiTUBE, random acts of kindness, reaching out to strangers
And it would be even more amazing if you reach out to that stranger, to that friend, yourself! You may give a suspended coffee vouchers yourself and connect with someone in need closely.

Concerns like how to identify the right recipient of a suspended coffee will arise. But imagine even if 1 out of the 10 suspended coffees went to a person who really needed it and couldn’t afford! It will be well worth the remaining 9!

Spreading kindness, one coffee at a time 🙂
